TRAVEL ADVICE

Travel to Porto or Lisbon is roughly the same. There is no huge price differences between the 2 itineraries for a second class travel:

If you fly to Porto:

Take the metro to Estação Porto Campanhã (~40 min) +

Take the Intercidades or Alfa Pendular train to Coimbra B. (~1h30) +

Take train, bus or taxi to reach hotel or Coimbra Observatory.

If you fly to Lisbon:

Take the metro to Gare do Oriente (5 min) +

Take the Intercidades or Alfa Pendular train to Coimbra B (~2h15) +

Take train, bus or taxi to reach hotel or Coimbra Observatory.

This is the railway site: https://www.cp.pt/passageiros/en

We suggest you to buy the train ticket directly in the station, as there is no need to make a reservation ( there is always place in the train!). This would prevent you to change the ticket if you miss the train, and pay an extra fee for it.

Important note: Intercities and Alfa Pendular trains do not stop at Coimbra (center), but only at Coimbra B. To get to the center, you must use another means of transport. There is usually a train to take you from Coimbra B to Coimbra station (this route is included in the ticket to Coimbra).
