ESAC WALL OF FAME

DESCRIPTION

The ESAC Wall of Fame is a visually appealing enumeration of the missions ESAC has been involved in (either for Science Operations and/or Archives), displaying the logos and launch/end dates for each mission. It provides enhanced visibility and understanding for visitors interested in Science Operations carried out over the years at ESAC. The ESAC Wall of Fame is located within the dedicated ESAC  Science Operations Status Room (SOPSR). This facility hosts an informative and visually impressive overview of science mission operations at ESA. The Science Operations Status Room consists of two dedicated rooms and a set of visualization tools for graphically presenting the operations of multiple science missions. It is designed as a facility to present how science mission operations are performed.

The Wall conveys a powerful message that ESAC has been involved, is involved and will be involved in a great number of missions.

MISSION DISK-FLIP CEREMONY

There are three special moments in a mission lifetime related to Wall of Fame:

- Mission Endorsed: when the logo/disk is first created and placed in the wall
- Launch: when the disk is rotated from orange to grey color, marking the away-from-us status
- End of Mision: when the disk is updated/replaced printing its end date.

SCI teams may have a small ceremony on these occasions

- Disk-flip ceremony for CHEOPS launch, 2019.

Background on ESAC Science operations

Science operations covers all responsibilities and capabilities in the planning and conduct of instrument operations, the definition and build-up of the ground systems, the distribution and archiving of data and products, and all related interactions with the scientific and user communities.

ESAC has been ESA’s Science Operations Centre since 2008. The operations of a science mission cover a broad range of skills and involve numerous actors. Typically the operations of an ESA science mission are a joint effort involving diverse organisations that are geographically dispersed where ESA, via the Science Operations Department, provides overall coordination.
