Overall useful links and tips
- 9292 is your best friend to move around the Netherlands, door-to-door. Consider installing the app in your phone before arrival. The app ns.nl is also useful to plan your journey by train from Schiphol airport, Rotterdam or other closeby cities.
- Uber works, but it is not as common as in other locations. Do not rely on "I'll take an Uber".
- You can rent a bike in Leiden at many locations. This will be the most easy way to commute within Leiden, if your accomodation is not right in the city centre. Information will follow.
By plane
Leiden is easily reachable from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (all information available in the web). It is one of the biggest airports in Europe, so you can find several (low-cost) airlines offering Amsterdam as destination. You can easily commute between Schiphol and Leiden by train (trains to Leiden Central Station depart every 15 minutes. It takes about 20 minutes to reach Leiden), by taxi (around 70 euros) or by regular bus (it will make several stops but it's a doable option if there are problems with the trains; check the website 9292 or ns.nl to plan your journey).
An alternative airport is Rotterdam-The Hague airport (not as well connected as Schiphol, but fairly popular for holiday destinations; worth checking if you are flying from Southern European countries or UK destinations). You can commute between Rotterdam-The Hague airport and Rotterdam/The Hague quickly with metro line E, and then commute to Leiden from Rotterdam/The Hague central stations (check 9292).
By train
Leiden is very well connected by train with other Dutch cities (Rotterdam, The Hague, Amsterdam and Utrecht). At the same time, these bigger Dutch cities offer train connections to other European/UK cities. Check the international webpage of the Dutch National Rail.
