EXOSAT made a number of significant scientific discoveries, including the: 

• Discovery of quasi-periodic oscillations in Low mass X-ray binaries (LMXRBs) from the accreting neutron star GX 5-1 as reported in Nature (1985), 316, 225 by van der Klis et al. 
• Comprehensive study of Active Galactic Nuclei variability
• Observation on LMXRB and Cataclysmic Variables over many orbital periods
• Measurement of iron lines in galactic and extragalactic X-ray sources
• Obtaining of high-resolution Extreme Ultra Violet (EUV) spectra
