Gaia publications in Peer-Reviewed Journals

A library of post-launch, peer-reviewed Gaia publications is being maintained by the ESA Gaia Project Scientist and can be found at https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/public-libraries/RRkgJNOORAyJ3BOuo5EdNQ. The publications in this list are supposed to meet at least one of the following criteria, which are being applied uniformly across ESA science missions:

  1. Makes direct use of Gaia data.
  2. Predicts results from the Gaia mission.
  3. Describes the Gaia mission, its instruments, operations, software or calibration.

With on average five papers per calendar day, the publication rate of Gaia is so high that individual inspection and vetting of every publication candidate is no longer sustainable. Therefore a pre-defined query aimed at identifying Gaia publications autonomously is being executed regularly on the database of the Astrophysics Data System (ADS). The results of that query are joined with a static library that corresponds to the manually-curated Gaia library as of September 2024. The details of this process are described below. The main consequence of this approach is that the results contain a small fraction of false positives, i.e. publications that do not satisfy any of the three criteria above.

While the Gaia publication library contains less than 5% false-positive entries, the aggregrated counts generally represent a lower limit to the true counts. This is because many publications make direct use of Gaia data without marking it clearly enough for automated identification.

The current yearly publication counts determined on the basis of the Gaia publication library are shown below:

Number of publications included in the Gaia library as a function of year. The hatched bar indicates the current year for which the count is necessarily incomplete. Credits: ESA/Gaia/DPAC, CC BY-SA 3.0 IGO.

Design of the automated query

The automated query that is executed on the ADS database is composed of the following elements:

  • Publication text contains acknowledgement “This work has made use of data from the European Space Agency (ESA) mission Gaia”
  • OR Gaia listed as “facility”
  • OR (“Gaia” in title or abstract AND cites at least one Gaia Data Release paper*)
  • OR (“Gaia DRN” in paper text AND cites at least one Gaia Data Release paper*)  where DRN is one of [DR1,DR2,EDR3,DR3,FPR,DR4]
  • OR (“Gaia Data Release N” in paper text AND cites at least one Gaia Data Release paper*) where N is one of [1,2,3,4] and there are variants for EDR3 and FPR
  • OR (“Gaia” NEAR5 “distance” in paper body AND cites (Bailer-Jones+18 OR Bailer-Jones+21))**

* The main Gaia Data Release papers in this context are:

** The use of Gaia-based distances presented in those works is interpreted as direct use of Gaia data. The two publications are:

The query that can be used directly in the ADS search field is:

Processing of query results

The results of the automated query are filtered as follows:

  • Select only publications marked by ADS as refereed
  • Select only publications in the ADS astronomy collection
  • Remove publications marked by ADS as PhD thesis

The resulting publication list is merged with the static library mentioned earlier to generate the final Gaia publication library.
