Home - Jovian Icy Moons' Surface Interactions With Their Environment
OBJECTIVES AND FORMAT
The workshop aims to investigate the interactions between the surfaces of Jupiter's icy moons (Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto) and their environment. These moons lack a substantial atmosphere, meaning their surfaces are directly exposed to the harsh conditions of Jupiter's magnetosphere. Their surfaces are continuously impacted by energetic particles and micrometeoroids, leading to changes in surface ice composition and physical structure. By combining theoretical, numerical, remote sensing, and experimental studies, the goal is to create a comprehensive inventory of these interactions, which will be crucial for the upcoming JUICE and Europa Clipper missions. A specific focus will be on using the exosphere to study these interactions. The exosphere, a surface-bounded layer, is shaped by processes such as sublimation, sputtering by photons and charged particles, and meteoroid bombardment. These processes release surface species into the exosphere and contribute to the space weathering of the surface materials. Understanding these interactions is crucial for comprehending the aging and renewal of the surface materials and the relationship between internal and external sources of these materials.
The format of the workshop will include oral presentations, Q&A sessions, round table discussions, and poster sessions to facilitate in-depth discussions and knowledge sharing. An interdisciplinary approach will be encouraged through informal discussions and dedicated sessions. The oral sessions will be held in a hybrid format, allowing for both in-person and remote participation.
The workshop also aims to support early-career scientists and students by providing sponsorships and opportunities to present their research.
