First Announcement
7 May 2021
The Roman Space Telescope is a NASA observatory designed to unravel the secrets of dark energy and dark matter, search for and image exoplanets, and explore many topics in infrared astrophysics. Roman will carry a 2.4-metre diameter telescope and two instruments, the Wide Field Instrument (WFI), and the Coronagraph Instrument (CGI). Its launch is planned around 2026; it will have a primary mission lifetime of 5 years, with a potential 5 year extended mission.
Around three-quarters of Roman's observing time will be spent carrying out large core surveys with the WFI, and the remaining fraction will be devoted to competitively-selected astrophysics surveys. Within the first 18 months of observations, 3 months will be devoted to CGI; although CGI is a technology demonstration experiment, it is also expected to lead to significant scientific achievements.
There will be no proprietary period for any of the data acquired by Roman. NASA plans to issue a Call for Proposals in the near future to select the teams who will enable the core science objectives in cosmology and exoplanet demographics.
ESA will provide some elements of the Roman payload and satellite, as well as some elements of the ground segment. As part of this provision, ESA will nominate five European scientists to participate in the preparation and exploitation of the core WFI science, and one to participate in the CGI programme. The ESA-nominated scientists will be selected based on a Call for Proposals coordinated with the one from NASA.
Purpose of thESE ESA organised Information Sessions
In the context of the approaching NASA and ESA calls, ESA is organising Information Sessions, whose main objectives are to:
- inform the European community of the ESA involvement in Roman and of the upcoming opportunities for participation
- identify European parties who are interested in the opportunities and assess the level and areas of interest
- provide an initial means for interested European parties to identify each other and discuss plans
- provide an initial means for interested European parties to identify potential US investigators and discuss plans
The Information Sessions will include presentations covering:
- generalities on the Roman mission, instruments, and scheme for science management
- an outline of the scheme for European participation
- current plans for surveys and associated science
- plans for provision of support to users of Roman data
In addition, depending on the responses to this invitation, it may be possible for interested European parties to make presentations on their plans for exploitation of Roman data. There will be the opportunity to ask questions during the meeting. All presentations will be recorded and made available a-posteriori.
You are invited to participate in the Information Sessions, which will take place online on two consecutive half-days (6-7 July). In order to participate, please fill out the registration form before 7 June. The form includes optional questions regarding ideas and plans for future exploitation of Roman data. Depending on this feedback, we may select some additional presentations. The final programme of the Information Sessions will be published by 21 June.
