2020 Demonstrator Workshop

The two new VO protocols provide a standardized way for telescope operators to provide access of sky visibility and future observing plans via a pull service. Such a service enables users (clients) to make automated queries in order to get the most up to date information they need without contacting telescope operators, filling in manual web forms etc - see Use Cases

The objective of this workshop was to show how the new VO protocols can be implemented. We have walked through examples of imeplementing both services for the NuSTAR Mission and the Nordical Optical Telescope (NOT).

This workshop has already taken place on Friday September 18 and Monday September 28, 2020, at 12UT. It consisted of two sessions of approximately 3 hours.

If you are interested in another such workshop, feel free to contact us.

Rationale

To unfold its full potentials, the new standard protocols need to be implemented by a large number of observatories - ideally by all observatories.
During the 2018 Workshop, we detected uncertainty about the 'how' and 'how much effort', and we understand that some more information in this direction is needed.

Some instructions how to implement the services are given under:
https://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/vovisobs_protocols/implementation-guides

This type of demo workshop targets both active implementers (software engineers) to see "how" as well as telescope operators/managers to get an idea of the degree of effort needed.

Agenda

  1. Welcome, short update of latest developments (20 minutes)
  2. ObjVisSAP (1 hour)
    1. Introduction Presentation (15 minutes)
    2. Report from implementers for NuSTAR, INTEGRAL, and XMM-Newton (15 minutes)
    3. Discussion with the audience (30 minutes)
  3. ObsLocTAP (1 hour)
    1. Introduction Presentation (15 minutes)
    2. Reports from implementer for NuSTAR, INTEGRAL, and XMM-Newton (30 minutes)
    3. Discussion (30 minutes)
  4. General discussion (40 minutes)

We are working on a consolidated list of Frequently Asked Questions to be posted in this page. We will try to make room for your questions during the respective discussion sessions. If time runs short, we can also take your questions by email after the workshop.
