XMM-Newton AO-23 Closure

The XMM-Newton Twenty-third Announcement of Opportunity (AO-23) closed on the 6th of October 2023.

In total, 441 valid proposals were received, 11 of them within the category of 'Multi-Year Heritage Programmes'. A total of 37.2 Ms were requested in this category, for which up to 6 Ms of observing time over at most three consecutive AOs will be available.

For the rest of the proposals (430) this Announcement of Opportunity covers a period of one year, with 12 Ms of observing time available for distribution. A total of 76.4 Ms of science time were requested. The over-subscription factor is 6.4.

A total of 51 proposals were received for Large Programmes, and 18 for Fulfil Programmes. Anticipated Target of Opportunity observations were requested in 65 proposals.

For the joint programmes, 93 proposals were submitted: 40 request time for the XMM-NuSTAR programme, 17 for the XMM-HST programme, 16 for the XMM-SWIFT programme, 14 for the XMM-VLT programme, 9 for the XMM-Chandra programme, 9 for the XMM-JWST programme, and 7 for the XMM-NRAO programme.

SOC received proposals from 372 different principal investigators from 30 countries. The number of countries involved increases to 39 if co-investigators are taken into account as well. Considering principal investigators and co-investigators, about 1500 individual scientists were involved in the response to the Twenty-third Announcement of Opportunity.

Yours sincerely,
