Instructions

This table contains several interactive features:

  • Pass the mouse over a Package Name box and the corresponding SAS tasks that are needed to complete the given package will be highlighted in gold.
  • Pass the mouse over a group of SAS tasks and those SAS tasks which are mandatory to be run beforehand will be highlighted in red, and those that are optional will be marked in green.
  • If a thread, or section of a thread, is available describing how to perform a specific task, or a set of tasks, it will be marked by in the Thread column. Placing the mouse over , the name of the corresponding thread is shown in a pop-up window.

Note: for a best view of the full table, use CTRL + '+' and CTRL + '-' to increase or reduce the zoom until the table fits in the whole browser window.

DATA ANALYSIS
Scientific product extraction
Point Source Extractor
Metatask for data processing
pn, MOS, RGS, OM
Extract scientific reduced data related to point sources, starting at the ODF level, corresponding to a given observation. It allows for some analysis interactivity to be carried out
Optimize Extraction Regions
Optimize point-like source extraction regions
pn, MOS
Optimize source and background extraction regions for further data processing like the creation of images, light curves and spectra
RGS
Re-define extraction regions
Image
Create and display images
pn, MOS
Create and display EPIC images from the calibrated and filtered event file

pn, MOS
Generate three-color coded spatial images from scalar event table attributes
pn, MOS
Create EPIC mosaic images
RGS
Create RGS images and masks from the calibrated and filtered event file
OM
Display OM images and sources from the source list
OM
Create OM mosaic images
Spectrum
Extract the spectrum of a point-like source
pn, MOS
Create EPIC source and background spectra from calibrated and filtered event lists
pn, MOS
Create EPIC ancillary and response files
pn, MOS
Create EPIC spectra and response files in one go
pn, MOS
Group EPIC spectral channels
pn, MOS
Generate a fluxed spectrum
RGS
Create RGS spectra from the calibrated and filtered event file, including response files and background subtraction. Channel rebinning is also possible
RGS
Generates source and background spectra for a single RGS exposure. Creates a response matrix file
RGS
Combine RGS spectra and create fluxed RGS spectra
OM
Interactive extraction of optical and U/V grism spectra
Light Curve
Extract the light curve of a point-like source
pn, MOS
Create EPIC light curves from the calibrated and filtered event file, including background subtraction and corrections for exposure losses. Also, the local satellite frame can be converted to Barycentric Dynamical Time
RGS
Create RGS light curves from the filtered calibrated event file, including background subtraction for any combination of RGS1 and RGS2, 1st and 2nd order
OM
Create OM light curves (fast mode)
Source Detection
Run source detection algorithms over EPIC and OM observations
pn, MOS
Run source detection algorithms on EPIC calibrated and filtered images to produce a list of the sources detected in an observation. It is also possible to run source detection tasks on a set of overlapping EPIC observations
OM
Interactively create, or modify, a list of the sources detected in a OM observation. It also performs upon images produced by ommosaic
Slew Processing
Process slew data taken with the pn camera
pn
Produce filtered event files and images for pn data taken during slews
Extended Sources
Process data from extended sources
pn, MOS
Extract a radial profile of a source in an image and fit a point spread function to it to test whether a source is extended
pn, MOS
The ESAS package includes tasks to create source and model particle background spectra and exposure-corrected, background-subtracted (particle and soft proton) images. It also offers software for mosaicking multiple observations of not necessarily co-aligned observations. More information about the analysis of extended sources in EPIC can be found at the BGWG pages. An ESAS warnings and watchouts page is available from NASA XMM-GOF.
OM
Interactively create, or modify, a list of the sources detected in a OM observation and run algorithms to determine the point-like or extended nature of a source
OM Photometry, Magnitudes and Variability
OM specific products
OM
Perform interactive photometry in OM images previously processed
OM
Recompute the photometry of one or more sources in a source-list file, using one of several methods
OM
Compute variability parameters of sources that have multiple detections in one or more observations
