First Soyuz liftoff from French Guiana |

On 21 October 2011, a Soyuz lifted off successfully for the first time from Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana with the same configuration as for the Gaia launch in 2013. This time it carried the first two Galileo In-Orbit Validation satellites. In the foreground you can see the purpose-built mobile service gantry, which was moved back to its parked position one hour before the Soyuz' liftoff.
